MagView provides a complete solution for mammography
information management to meet the changing needs of a
leading breast center.
The Betty Puskar Breast Care Center of Mary Babb Randolph Cancer Center at West
Virginia University Hospitals was established through the generous donation of
philanthropist Betty Jane Puskar, a breast cancer survivor. The Breast Care Center is
the doorway to breast health care options within the complex of West Virginia University
Hospitals, The Physician Office Center and the Mary Babb Randolph Cancer Center for
the women of WV and surrounding areas.
The center was designed provide a warm, compassionate environment along with the
latest imaging and information technology to fulfill its mission of improving the health of
West Virginia Women. Beyond diagnosis and treatment, the Center's ultimate purpose
is to reduce the incidence of breast cancer throughout West Virginia by an active
program of educational outreach aimed at prevention and early detection.
"When the Breast Care Center opened in 1996, we needed to find a system that would
allow us to automate the reporting and tracking required by MQSA," recalls Alice
Belmont, RT(R)(M)(QM), Coordinator of the Center. "We looked for a product that
would assure that no patient follow-up would be missed. After researching all options,
MagView was the only system that met the high standards we had set."
Once the MagView system was selected, it was implemented along with an interface to
the center's Radiology Information System. From the time it was installed, MagView has
been used to create structured breast imaging reports, perform patient tracking and
recall functions, track patient clinical history, and perform quality assurance reporting.
For more than 10 years, MagView has sought to meet the changing needs of the center
by creating customized enhancements to the system, creating custom reports, adding
additional fields, and supporting the many requested changes to the configuration of the
system. Throughout that time, many on-site visits have been conducted by MagView
staff to review the needs of the site, and ensure that MagView was providing the most
complete and efficient system possible.
"Over the years, as we have added new procedures and modified our workflow,
MagView has been instrumental in accommodated our changing needs and providing
solutions," says Alice Belmont, RT(R)(M)(QM), Coordinator of the Center. "When we
needed interfaces with other hospital systems, MagView made it possible. When we
needed to change the way reports were generated, MagView responded."
States Belmont, "MagView has such a well developed product, that it would be a step
backward to use any other system," states Belmont. "But more important than that is
the service they provide, and the confidence that MagView will provide the support
necessary to make the system work for us."
